Welcome to Rock & Climb, the guild in Ashes of Creation for climbers and height seekers alike.
Our motto: Be where you shouldn't. Be wherever you choose; be it the peak of a cliff, a pole in a market, or the most tucked away little edge of a castle wall — you will get there.
We take pride in finding the oddest places. Be it with pure skill, abilities, or glitching through geometry (airborne mounts not included).
We help each other, and others — there is no room for toxicity, either within or outside the guild. We treat everyone with respect.
Strategies
Interested in learning some strategies to climbing? There are a multitude of small tricks you can apply to improve your climbing abilities; ranging from basic movement tricks, to (ab)using spells!
Edge walking
Large rocks in the world are very detailed, which allows the character to grab on to, stand on, and even walk alongside. You'd be surprised how little geometry is needed to support your character walking on it.
It is recommended to rotate your camera check for edges where your character could potentially stand. During summer time, slopes that can be grabbed are colored in moss color, giving a good idea where to aim for.
Geometry phasing
Rocks models can be climbed into during certain circumstances. For instance, when rocks are rotated and aligned in a certain way, it is possible to climb "into" them.
Once inside you can "see" out of the rock as if it wasn't there, and you'll be walking on other rocks or the underlying terrain. It is certainly possible to exit the rock, albeit a bit messy. Your character will seemingly get stuck inside and not be able to leave; however, simply continue running towards the "invisible wall" and after a little while you should be able to exit the rock.
It is also possible in very narrow spaces to have your mount spawn inside rocks, potentially allowing you to escape getting stuck in world geometry.
Slope launching
When two different rocks models intersect and create a narrow "slope", you can roll up against them to gain a of of upwards momentum. This launches you upwards, and in some cases you might reach heights above the top of the slope.
Mages can also use the Blink spell to gain massive upwards momentum, which should in theory be able to climb the most challenging of cliffs.
It is very important to note that this only works when two rock models are intersecting – tight spots in single objects do not work for boosting, and your character usually end up rolling in-place where you touch the rock.
As of writing, it is not confirmed, but believed that this is not possible with when a rock model intersects with terrain; only between two rock models will this work.
Jumpsmaxxing
When you move in a direction while jumping, you loose jump height. However, if you jump first, then move while mid-air, you can reach ledges that are a tiny bit higher up. Useful when you need to reach a ledge that's a bit off to the side, and just a little bit too high up to reach.
Mid-air rolling
Rolling in mid-air follows the same principles as when on solid ground: you roll in the direction you're moving in – but if you are "still", meaning no horizontal velocity, you roll backwards.
This is an excellent "emergency save" when failing a jump, and needing to reach some ledge to land on before falling to your doom. This also makes it possible to "jump around" edges that poke out from the side of a wall, where you jump out, then roll to gain some extra speed to reach a ledge.
Be wary! You roll in the direction that your character is moving, not the direction you camera is looking! If your camera is looking north, but your character is moving east, you will roll to the east.
Fall-damage cancellation
Rolling mid-air will completely cancel all your fall damage! Make sure to roll slightly before reaching the ground. Rolling twice, in case you rolled to early the first time, has the same effect.
Spells
Certain classes have different mobility spells. For instance, the Archer has an offensive ability which also does a large backflip, allowing to reach heights not usually possible.
As mentioned above, the Mage's Blink spell can be used for launching oneself upwards, but also to simply clear large gaps.
The Bard has a spell to reduce the effect of gravity, which can be used to reach otherwise unreachable ledges.
Strategy names are subject to change; I just made them up on the spot.
